300 JUMC Greeters
JUMC is launching a new process to attract, welcome, respond to and connect newcomers. Twenty-five people learned about our new greeter ministry on February 19, and additional training sessions will be offered. Greeters are asked to focus on guests who come to JUMC worship services--welcoming them sincerely, making them at home, introducing them to other folks and generally acting as a warm, loving host on Christ’s behalf.
Each person who worships at JUMC is a host to our guests! Consider your welcoming role with the following ideas.
♥ The “official” greeters are on the job specifically to take care of guests. Please don’t be offended if a greeter asks you to save your fellowship or church business for another time!
♥ Greeters will bring folks into the worship space and introduce them to others near where they sit. Please be friendly and make space for our guests. Even if your favorite spot is on the aisle near the back, please watch for guests and be willing to scoot over so they can sit there.
♥ During the Passing of the Peace, extend the peace of Christ and a warm welcome to those you don’t know. (You might say: “Peace of Christ to you. I don’t believe I know you. How long have you been at Jonesboro UMC?”)
♥ Please put your name and address in the attendance pad. It encourages others to do the same.
Visitors have great courage to come among folks they don’t know, and God has led them to us. Let’s show them Christ as we appreciate the gift of their presence.
Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service & Witness
If you’ve been among the United Methodist family for long, you’ve no doubt heard about our commitment to support the church with our prayers, presence, gifts and service. As of this year, those who join the United Methodist Church promise to be faithful in their witness, too. The addition was approved by the General Conference last spring. When newcomers join the local church, all members pledge along with them. The new wording is meant to remind us of the mission and evangelistic responsibility that goes with being part of God’s community. We are not only to “show up” but to “show forth” God’s saving love. Witness has been an integral part of laity’s role from the earliest days of Methodism.
